At the 33rd African Union Summit in Niamey, Niger last month, I spoke at an event on tackling the dual challenges of malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs)—diseases that affect the poorest and most vulnerable people around the world, especially in Africa. On the question of how we can promote synergies between malaria and NTDs efforts, my response was simple: focus on the patient, not the disease.
