PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is a large copper and gold mining company with a workforce population more than 26,000. Located in the district of Mimika, Papua province in Indonesia, the company operates a holistic health services delivery program including malaria control. 

The Public Health & Malaria Control (PHMC) program is sponsored by PTFI and operates a robust, evidence based, integrated malaria control program covering residential and industrial sites within its concession. Malaria is endemic with Plasmodium vivax being the dominant strain.

Timeline

23/03 - Knowledge and behavior survey using a malaria questionnaire for distribution and completion during medical check-ups. Questionnaire seeks to determine level of knowledge on the disease, prevention measures and acceptability of repellents.

18/04 - Email blast / pop-up message will commence on this date and beamed to all desktops and laptops.

21/04 - Webinar on this day recommended due to a bigger audience than 25th April. This is the highlight of the commemorations. Speakers have been selected to present on the following topics:

  • Topic 1: The Importance of Completing Malaria Treatment: Dr Jeanne Rini Poespoprodjo Sp. A, MSc, PhD (Paediatrician and Researcher, Timika Research Facility, Mimika District Hospital, Papua, Indonesia).
  • Topic 2: The Role of Topical Repellents in a Malaria Control & Elimination Program-Challenges & Opportunities: Prof Din Syafruddin, MD, PhD (Head of Parasitology Department, University of Hasanuddin, Makassar, Indonesia.

22/04 - Webinar Presentation to 80 Safety, Health & Environment Practitioners.

  • Topic: The ABCD in Malaria Control- Emphasis on Bite Prevention: Ms Riska Okyana, SKM, MSc (Entomology General Foreman, Public Health & Malaria Control, International SOS) N/B It is hoped SHE Officers will cascade messages to their various workplaces.

23/04 - Webinar beamed to International SOS health staff onsite.
