The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, once a malaria eradication model in the Americas, now reports an alarming number of cases and has overtaken Brazil as the main malaria contributor in the region.

The Regional Malaria Elimination Initiative has been launched with the involvement of RBM Partners (the Inter-American Development Bank, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Carlos Slim Foundation) to support seven Central American countries (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama) and the Dominican Republic.

In June 2018, Paraguay became the first country in the Americas, since Cuba in 1973, to be certified by WHO as malaria-free. Others, including Argentina, are on track to eliminate malaria by 2020.

The RBM Partnership will further engage with the region – in close collaboration with Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and other Partners – to accelerate this agenda.
